23000 m2 of Reinforced Earth walls for largest transportation infrastructure project in Saskatchewan’s history

The highway bypass of the City of Regina, capital of the Province of Saskatchewan in Canada, will open to traffic on October 29, 2019.

The Regina Bypass is the largest transportation infrastructure project in the province of Saskatchewan’s history, representing an investment of CAD 1.9 billion (USD 1.5 billion).

Its scope: 61 km of roads, including 37 km newly built, 24 km refurbished, 12 new interchanges, and 33 new bridges and viaducts.

The Reinforced Earth Company Canada, part of VINCI Construction, was awarded the MSE wall design and supply portion of this ambitious project. Started in 2015, the construction phase was completed in just four years.

RECo Canada put in place a special and accelerated panel production plan to meet the stringent construction schedule. A total of 11,800 panels for a total wall area of 23,000 m2 were fabricated and shipped to the project in record time.

The project provided numerous challenges throughout the design, production, and construction phases, including constraints due to certain specifications required for the project such as cold weather and harsh environmental factors.

The area characterized by very soft clays, known as “Regina Clay” which typically exhibit high settlement rates. One of the major advantages of the Reinforced Earth® TerraClass® system is its ability to accommodate high-anticipated settlements without a significant impact on the structure’s overall stability and aesthetics.

The new bypass will improve road safety, streamline traffic, and promote economic development in the province by providing faster and more reliable access to three major Saskatchewan highways: The Trans-Canada Highway and Highways 6 and 11.
